What are the different varieties and types of macro lenses?

well there are zoom macros and prime macros. Prime macros are more prevalent and tend to give you a better image quality. Within prime macro lens of course you have different focal lengths and minimum focsuing distances which will dictate the max magnification spec.

The macro lens of nikon that I am familar with are the 105mm VR and 60mm. VR is useless in macro. The 60mm is one the sharpest primes that nikon has ever made.

I still don't understand why Nikon put VR on the 85mm Micro and left it with f/3.5.

I would have dumped the VR and insisted on f/2.8 speed.

Maybe the genius Nikon beancounters thought that 'VR' would sell better than 2.8?
And they got to leave it at 3.5 to get a better roi?
Hmmm, maybe I'll rent one for a couple days and see what the fuss is all about...

Most of the time that I've shot macro, I've used a small aperture to have a wider depth of field so my guess is that the design was to make the lens smaller and lighter?
