Traveling with camera to Brazil and Colombia?

Hello, I am very excited about my new D750 and I do feel comfortable lugging it off to Hong Kong and Australia next month. HOWEVER, I have travel to Sao Paolo, Rio and Bogota in November. I have been warned about having my camera out in Rio. Should I risk it? I have a Coolpix I could take instead. I'm just not sure if the worry is worth it!

I've been to São Paulo and Bogotá for work. I took a Nikon 1 V1 rather than a DSLR but admittedly didn't have much down time to get out with the camera. Personally, I would take a Nikon 1 if going again.

I don't know much about Nikon 1. Why is that so popular?
