Post your Tokina 100mm Macro lens shots.

Yes, another post your xxxxxxxx lens/camera shots thread. So sue me. I'm excited that I just received this lens, and my initial impressions are pretty good. The lens lives up to all the positive reviews about sharpness.

My first 2 shots, since I just got home, and it's the middle of the night in this part of the world.

These were taken on the front porch from atop of a shaky step ladder. (Mrs Blacktop said I'm insane and should seek professional help)

Tomorrow I'll get up earlier than usual before going to work and take a few shots in the sunshine.

My first impression of the lens is that it is lighter than I thought it would be. I think my 11-16mm Tokina was heavier if I remember correctly.
Another weird thing is that although it is a f/2.8 lens it only opens up to f/3.2. Has anyone else experienced this?

Over all it is a very well made lensds and it feels nice on the D7100. These were shot with that camera. I will try it on the D750, but if there isn't much difference in IQ I might just leave it on the D7100 and have that camera be a dedicated Macro setup.
Also will order a ringflash. The Neewer flash on the hotshoe works nice, but it is a little cumbersome for this type of shooting.

BTW ,these spiders set up shop on the vinyl siding so the reason for the white background.

Thanks, but with the porch light and the flash and the shaky step ladder, I'm sure this lens is capable of better things. Which lens did you almost snag? I started this thread so we can talk about anything. It doesn't have to be on topic.

The spider and yellow head bird pics I posted throughout the week, we're done with a Tamron 2.8 70-200...my pal had let me borrow it. Sweet lens...I would prefer a vc version though, and I'm wondering if the Nikon version is worth the $1,600?

At a pawn shop today, I found the same tamron lens for $325...I don't have the funds just yet, but I was going to put a couple bucks down to hold it for me. After closer inspection, it is for a Canon. I suppose I could get a mount conversion?

On Ebay, there is a Sigma 105 for $250 ), with a make offer option...I was going to offer $200. The seller is in Vegas, so I was going to also offer to meet up somewhere to nix the shipping.

Then KEH has a handful of older lenses...but don't know how'd they do on the '7100.

Also, my mom said if I see any rattlesnakes on my treks to not try to take pictures...

Honestly, I don't know how I'd react....

If I would have seen a that lens I probably would have made an offer myself. I paid 379 new for the Tokina. There were really no other used ones around except the ones from Japan.

Watching you :D when my long zoom finally arrives the next thing will be a new macro lens,at the moment i have my very old sigma 105 through a dumb adapter,i have a choice of a few dedicated m4/3 macro lenses but the longest is 60mm,its a FOV of a 120mm but ime liking the FOV the 105 gives me @ 210mm,so lets see some results i cant ignore.

So @Blacktop it looks to me like Mike just hired you as his test engineer. ;)

Nice first shots Pete, plenty of sharp detail there.

What you have noticed is normal for macro lenses in general. When you focus in close, the narrower the widest available aperture will be ( and it should stop down further as well), if you focus on something say 20 feet from you, you should be able to get f2.8.
When I got my first macro lens ( 2ndhand Nikon 55mm) I thought there was something wrong with it until someone on here told me it was normal.

Thanks. I just took some non macro shots and it does open to f/2.8

I'm thinking of selling the Tamron SP 70-300 vc I recently aquired...that 2.8 really put things into perspective for me...I need to invest in some decent glass. I paid $300 for the Tamron, but I've never been happy with the results. Tomorrow is its final test. If it's not doing as I want, I'm putting it up for sale or trade.

Too windy out for macro, but I found this dead fly on a spider web on the porch.

Ewww... I gotta remember you now have this macro lens and that you like bugs. :hororr: So I'm assuming you cropped a little--if so, how much would you say you cropped? I should get out my Nikon 105 macro and extension tubes and play around a little! ;) But no bugs for me!!! :beguiled:

Sorry about the yuckie image, but you know how it is. You buy a new lens and as soon as you get it it's either raining or too dark or whatever, so you just take any shot because you're excited about your new toy.
About the cropping, it's at 50%.

I promise to post pretty things with this lens from now on.
Here is an example.

I'm going to keep this lens on my D7100 for close ups. It's sharper than my D750 when it comes to this type of shooting. I'm thinking because the lack of an OLPF.

This is nice! It just needs more DOF. That's something I need to work on with my macro. I never know exactly how far to go with my aperture when doing macro because I haven't played around with it enough.

Since I stopped shooting the high school drama shows, my D7100 sits unused in my bag. I should mount my Nikon macro to it and put it in a separate camera bag along with my extension tubes. Earlier this spring I bought an Oben rail so I could do more macro. Although I'm not into bugs, I did notice some extremely small flowering weeds when I mowed yesterday. :beguiled:
