Nikonites: Wow. Just... Wow!!

It's a particularly slow time of year for me at work right now and so I've been able to do a fair amount of cyber-slacking from behind my desk. Being as slow as it is I've been poking around some other photography forums just to see what's out there. Mainly I've been lurking, reading threads and just gauging these "other forums" in the overall. I'm not going to mention any by name but anyone whose looked for photography forums would certainly recognize most, if not all, the sites I've been to over the past few days. Having never really done this before I have a new and deeply abiding appreciation for Nikonites and the people who post here.

In all honesty, words adequate to describe what I've seen on those other forums are simply beyond me. The outright rudeness, thinly veiled name-calling, disrespect to people new to the hobby, to hobbyist-photographers and/or new posters left me floored. Never, EVER, in all the time I've spent on Nikonites have I witnessed anything like it. And I say that knowing I've rubbed a few people the wrong way and having had my own feathers ruffled a few times. Even so, even at it's "worst" on this site, has it even approached the downright mean-spirited posting I've seen on some of these other forums.

I can only conclude we have a very special forum here and my appreciation for it, and for everyone here, has been elevated in the extreme. It may sound corny, but I'm damn proud to say I'm a member here; and I want to thank everyone who supports Nikonites, from the top down and in whatever fashion. I want to thank everyone who posts here, for their help, their advice and for the sense of comradery it fosters.

Cheers to one and all... Cheers indeed!

Why do you think it was a hard decision for me to move from Nikon gear.

I agree completely. I have dabbled in some other photo forums myself, but never stuck around for long. I especially agree with this quote,
disrespect to people new to the hobby
I have never understood why some people need to degrade others who are just starting out. Maybe it makes them feel better about themselves. Who knows.

Yup, I know what you mean. I found a couple other sites that are horrible. This site is run very well. And the folk here are great to talk to.

upon my return to photography 2 years ago, I was living in those forums and yes they were brutal to say the lest. I know I am in a safe place here, but I "post and run" even here because the treatment and feedback I got from other forums. If you did not have double digit years of experience (consecutively) you had no right to have an opinion. I am soo glad to have found this forum. You all are great and very kind, I have learned and continue to grow as a photographer because of you. I get on here every morning and read posts even if I don't post. thank you!

I agree with that. I have been the last two years and the wife went with me this year. It is a great group and worth the time and money to go. I will be back next year.

Let's plug the M&G for Feb 2018. Check the calendar for dates. (Yes, we do have a calendar.)

I've been to all of them so far, along with Kevin and Rich. Good people, fun time, lots to shoot and you don't have to hang with the pack.

You know I would love to do that. I am just not sure if I could walk the whole thing you all cover. Who knows, with enough planning maybe I could do it and bring a wheelchair as backup :encouragement:

most of the trails are level but gravel. I was thinking of bringing my motorized scooter next year and sharing it with the wife. We both got very tired last year. I think the scooter could handle the terrain. Will find an area around here that is about the same and see how it works.

There is camaraderie between members here, and in general a respectful nature. When Scott Kelby did his Photo Walk a few years back, it was nice to meet jdeg, Eduard, and Backdoor Hippie. The Nikonites meet and greets that are done in various places must be similar. If anything does get out of hand, it's easy enough to click the button to report a concern. Thank you to the mods and John for keeping a watchful eye on the discussions.

I've made friends here and lost a few. It's my first stop in the morning and the last at night, a solace of council, camaraderie, and cheer, for which I thank you all.

Besides, what the hell else would I do with all the pictures I take?
