    SLR-less

Today I sold and shipped my D800E and 2/3'rds of my lens trinity. For the first time since 1983, I don't own a SLR or D-SLR. It has been a long time coming to this decision and quite frankly feels a bit weird. My wonderful spouse even told me that I didn't need to sell it. I think I'll keep her.

In May we took a trip to Croatia for two weeks and I told myself that if I felt confident with my mirrorless trinity afterwards, it was time to make the break. I was dragging my feet but Fujifilm's expected announcement tomorrow has removed any lingering concerns. I use and will continue to a Nikon 1 for the unique capabilities the system offers.

A couple observations on selling my gear. I had purchased a second Fuji body, a pancake-type prime and macro. I decided to also sell them. I listed the Nikon and Fuji gear at the same time. I easily received 4-5 times the number of inquiries on the mirrorless gear and sold all of it with a couple hours of listing. The D-SLR took a couple days with a couple lenses still to go. I was concerned with resale on the mirrorless gear as Nikon has a well-deserved reputation for holding reasonable value. Most of the D-DSLR and mirrorless gear had been purchased used and I effectively broke even. Of course, I paid the "new car tax" on the lenses which I purchased new.

Part of the reason I was dragging my feet was because of the folks here at Nikonites. We're working hard and starting slow at the sister site to try to establish the same community. What has been encouraging is that as some Nikonites have added or moved to mirrorless, there is a place to go that feels familiar. @jdeg and I are trying to ensure that the community extends rather than separates by using the same monthly assignments and encouraging references between them.

My point in creating this rambling thread is to encourage everyone to try something different because you never know where it is going to lead you. Whether it is moving from DX to FX, a consumer body to a pro, or even experimenting with mirrorless, getting out of your comfort zone can be exciting!

I guess I am just to old to try a smaller camera. I still like the weight of a DSLR. But I used to shoot medium format and they always felt good

I have over recent years sold all my Nikon DSLR gear and tried Panasonic Lumix mirror less gear and even a top of the range Lumix bridge camera but now I am back with Nikon and have no plans to change again.
I have an advanced degree in procrastination and another one in paranoia.
