Vintage razors

Not a collector, but I have an interest. At one time I wanted to learn to shave with a straight razor, but I only got as far as double edge. Much more comfortable and cheaper than all the gimmicky razors out there now. I don't even bother whipping up a lather anymore, A can of Babasol and a Merkur Futur meets all my needs for a great shave.

Yeah I collect double edge razors.
And have 1 straight razor.
Prefer to shave double edge.
The vintage double edge blow the new ones out of the water.

Yeah, I wish I had kept some of my dad's old double edges razors. The Murkur works well for me though, I know some hate it. I also have a EJ DE89. I prefer the Murkur, nice 'munching' sound when I use it, lol.

When my mom died last year in cleaning out her home I found my fathers strop and straight razor. I know that strop was his fathers. I could not find a cup but have since found one and it is in our guest half bath as decoration. I still need to know how to display the razor though.

LOL. Would have never thought a discussion on razors would be seen on a Nikon forum. Not complaining just reminds me of how close-knit a community this is.

Don, the razors do look nice open as John suggested, but it might be a temptation if you have kids coming around. I like the stands that have a razor and a brush hanging. It gives a balanced look. I don't have one, but they are cool. Just do a google image search for 'straight razor stand'. Amazon actually sells some, same search term.

If you check out some of the shaving forums, many of those guys are very into posting photos of their shaving gear. Same with the flashlight guys, they are big on pictures of their lights. Lots of crossover with some of our hobbies. I never thought of shaving as a hobby, but it is for many.

A funny thing led to this discussion.
I am teaching my neice photography.
I wanted to teach her brother also.
He is not interested in photography at all.
But he was very insistant that I teach him to shave.

Everyone that knows me finds it crazy that I prefer to shave with razors from the 20's, and 30's.
Just thought I would see if there were any other weirdo's out there.

I do. I have 3 vintage straight razors and one current production straight razor. I use all of them, and I straight shave every day.

I use a double edge. It sits on a stand with my brush and bowl.

Once you switch to the "old school" method of shaving...it becomes much more ritualized. I actually look forward to shaving now.
