Sony XQD card just stop working

I called Sony and told them that my XQD card started giving me this message in my card reader and in my camera. He said the bad news is it can't be fixed but the good news is it has a five year warranty so he gave me a case number and told me to send it in for a replacement. A special thank you to B&H Camera for giving me access to all my receipts which is needed for a warranty replacement. Sent it off today and I will give you an update when I receive the new card.

You should consider contacting Nikon to let them know. I doubt they will do anything for you, but you could ask them to log the information. You should be able to open a case and upload this pic for them to see. Just a suggestion....

I am not actively shooting weddings but this is what I did when shooting with D7K (I had two at the time) I would rotate the cards from job to job. Slot 1 was getting the images then at the next wedding what was used in Slot 1 was moved to Slot 2. All cards were formatted in camera. After the wedding season those cards were replaced with new ones. The older cards were used for portrait (remember in a portrait session you can do over as long as the client is not on his/her death bed) or personal use. I did this with my previous equipment. Yes its expensive but at least you have some sense of security.
It really does not matter if it's a card, a SSD drive or a mechanical rotating drive all of them have finite life of read and writes before a MTBF (mean time between failures) in read and write and also insertions. Look at the card if you remove like I do you can see wear and I imagine also in camera.
Even my 2012 iMac has an imminent hard drive failure when I got a SMART warning; I had to crack it open and replace the drive. Everything will eventually fail that's why when I did wedding I had 5 bodies, 5 flashes, etc so in event of a failure I had a back up. I learned this early on when a Mamiya C330 failed, I had to use the Mamiya C220 backup plus a Nikon FM.
Whats that's saying about the eggs in one basket is so true.

The first job I had out of high school back in 1970 was shooting with a Mamiya C330 and it was to shoot candids around a resort. Ahhhh the memories.

The camera is fine it is the card that is the problem. My other card works fine in the card reader and the camera.

My point is only that Nikon should know those cards can fail even though the body may not have caused it. Doesn't one of the mirrorless bodies only have one slot for this type of card? I'm not sure they offer any type of backup for one of the new mirrorless bodies. And that's why I'm hoping you'd at least report it to Nikon.

Can you still use some type of SD card as a backup? And can you use SD cards until you get the other one replaced?

Take care. I hope this gets resolved quickly for you! :encouragement:

The Sony card doesn't work in the card reader on my iMac or in my camera. They both give me the same message in the picture. My Lexar card works in both the iMac with card reader and in the camera. The camera works fine with my Lexar 64 gig card taking pictures and viewing them.

UPDATE ON MY XQD CARD PROBLEM

I contacted Sony about my XQD card not working and they told me the bad news was that it could not be fixed but the good news was that it had a five year warranty and they would replace it. I sent it in with the required information and a copy of my receipt along with my card and they received it on January 11th according to the tracking number. As of the 14th of February I had not heard anything so I called to get an update and told them that I really needed it. I talked with a gentleman named Francisco and he said that he would check on it and call me back the same day. In fact he did call me back and said that they would send it out the next day and overnight it to me and I would have it before noon on Saterday and it arrived around 10:00 this morning, Saturday Feb. 16th. I was originally dissapointed by the length of time but was amazed at Francisco and how he corrected the problem. He also sent me an email letting me know a brand new card had been sent and also went the extra step and called me to let me know that it was shipped and was sent overnight. I am now very impressed with Sony Media service and cannot say enough good about Francisco and how he handled my problem. Many thanks, Sony!!!!!

This'll add fuel to the single storage slot debates....

I dont think it will... Of all the people using XQD on this site, this is the first one to be dead looking at the searches, compare that to SD ... Its pretty good going, of course no storage media is 100% immune to failure.

You can not compare it like that, see how many devices there are on the market and, what follows, the sd cards produced, the produced xqd cards are much less, and they already combine with capacities of 120 and 128 Gb ....
