Focal length

Is it possible to determine what focal length you are using while you take a photo? If I wanted to take a picture at a certain focal length, how would I do it? Say I want to shoot a photo at 17mm with a 12 to 24mm. How would I do it?

On my lens It has the focal lengths near the zoom rings..

Ok I get it. How 'bout if I had a converter? I'm actually asking for someone else and I can't see the converter but I'm guessing the focal length is not printed anywhere on it so I will look up the specifics on the converter she got. Thanks. And I can't find a 17mm prime that would be practical on the D7000.

Lol, now you're just covering your tracks before we start the blonde jokes :)

I would think there is a multiplier like 1.4 somewhere on the lens. In that case about 12mm would equal about 17mm.
