I 've only been into photography for 12 months, And I got a 50mm 1.8D about 6 months ago, Use it about 75% of the time, and now connected to my D7100 it will auto focus as well, so a bonus :)

My first 50 was actually an 80mm on a Yashica Mat-124 that used 120 film. Then I later got a Nikkormat with a 50 I think it was f2 but not sure since it's been many many moons ago.

So, what is the difference between the FM2 and the FM2N?

The top flash sync speed in the FM2N is 1/250 second, compared to 1/200 sec. in the FM2. Also, the viewfinder image in the FM2N is slightly brighter.

If I'm not mistaken, mounting the MD-12 motor drive to the FM2 required a bit of finagling. Not so on the FM2n.

It seems that f/1.8 is the cheapest aperture for most lenses. Am I correct? Is it the best general use lens, or the first that you should buy unless you have a specific use?

Buy general-use lenses. A 50/1.8 is as general of a lens you can get. Don't spend money on anything special until you know you'll use it.

Canon 50mm f1.8 on an Ftb body, bought second hand in 1977. The only 35mm SLR I ever owned. And I miss it dearly.

I wish I'd not bothered with the D3300 kit lens and bought a 35mm or 50mm instead. Still, the other half loves the little zoom and it's given me time to find out which focal length I shoot at most.

My first 50mm was a Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8 D lens I bought last year! Lol But my first prime lens was a Nikkor 105mm f/4 micro non ai lens converted to an, and that was an awesome lens I wish I had kept! Lol But a very good friend now owns the 105mm and I'm using my Nikkor AF 105mm micro f/2.8 ed lens! :)

But I've found myself to be a huge fan of prime lenses, and I love all of mine! :D

My next lens goal will likely be the Nikkor AF 85mm f/1.8 ed lens! :D

My first 50mm was the nikkor 50mm 1.8 AF-D and I liked it, and still do. Don't use it that much though, I make much more use of my tamron 17-50mm 2.8 and the sigma 10-20mm

That would be the lens on my Argus C3.

Me too. And my sister gave it away. I will never forgive her. :)

My first SLR 50mm was a Konica Hexanon 50mm f/1.8. I've still bot the Konica Autoreflex body. I didn't let my sister get near it! :)

Was my '66 Nikkor-H f/2 I got off ebay 2 years ago. Looking back, it would've been even better to get my f/1.2 back then and call it a day on 50s.
