Re: Wud's project 365

wud, your work is spectacular so I have to ask--how are you marketing yourself to get shoots? If it was me, I'd make some flyers with sample photos on them (contact info, web site, etc.) and distribute them to veterinarians, pet stores, breeders, and any place that deals with dogs/pets. Plus I'd leave a business card at these places, too. Then in a month or two, I'd check back to see if they need any additional flyers. You could even bird-dog a small percent back to the vet/pet stores/breeders etc from where the referral came.

As for kids, a lot of daycare centers and schools here in the US have their own photography company they prefer, but maternity wards, toy stores, children's clothing stores, pediatricians, etc might be places to market yourself, too. You are quite capable as a photographer and do absolutely gorgeous work...don't sell yourself short, but please take the time to market yourself somehow. You deserve it!!! ;)

The book idea is a great one. Also have you thought about calendars? Dog calendars are pretty popular too. I see the dog photography as your bread and butter. Maybe try and do some work with a shelter?

I think it is just a matter of getting your name out there. Like Ron said. You have got everything going for you. Now all it needs to do is just line up for you.

Spot on, hark. That's really something I need to do. I just don't feel good enough with the graphic work so I keep avoiding it, lol. Like my pictures, I want those things to be perfect so it takes a million years..

Good thing is, when we learned all the different machines in school we are allowed to work on and print our own stuff (after school hours of course), only paying for the materials. That's amazing and I can hardly wait

I have a bunch of business cards but I have no idea where to leave them! In shops, most don't want it laying around. I'll try talking to my girlfriend, she has kids, so maybe she have some ideas. Flyers are next project. I also looked around at the vet my dog goes to, but no where to hang advertisement. Maybe Ill just do it anyways.. ;)

Hey, what does bird-dog means..?

As always fantastic photos.
You will be going places real soon.
The best way to market yourself is to ask others how you can help them.
What about teaming up with a dog groomer doing a joint deal.
"Book your dog for a groom and get a free photo form WUD (World's Undisputed best ever Dog photographer). Mai will photograph your family member in a way you could never imagine"
Then give them one photo which will make them want more.

The kennels where we take our dogs for day care do agility classes over the weekend - Is there anywhere near you does similar? You could get some great action shots etc. as the dogs go over the obstacles and you could introduce your portrait work too?

Hey, what does bird-dog means..?

It's a slang term not often used! Sorry about any confusion although since you like dogs, I thought it would be appropriate. ;) It is like a kickback or benefit to the person who is responsible for referring someone. In the case of a local photographer who does daycare photos, he bird-dogs back a percent of the profits to the day care facility. If you consider offering a small percent to the organization or person responsible for getting you referrals, just factor in the cost before setting your price--can be 5%-10% or so. That's a bird-dog (aka kickback from the profits you take in). Of course, you don't have to offer them anything, but if you do, they might be a little more pro-active on your behalf.

What graphic work has you uneasy?

All of it? Setting up a flyer. The design. Stuff like that..

I've avoided agility so far, because I think the surroundings are awful.. All the agility stuff, tents, people. So messy. (Talking about contests now).
Also there are already a couple of photographers who do this, so I don't think it's really needed.
I am going to lure coursing though! In 2 weeks. Found out there is a race, really wanna try it out.

I offered shooting people (and their dogs) at dog training and did a few times but it went a little weird? If asked I would do it again, of course.

I'll think about your great suggestions, I am sure you are on to something.

Ahh! Yes, that is a very good idea. Thanks!
5-10% is absolutely fine, for getting more work.

Maybe just pop some samples up in a boarding kennels? I'd love to get into pet photography, but I'm nowhere near that level yet.... I just practice on my own dogs!

Day 106 - my first multi-multi panorama pic, 26 files and a 360 degree picture. Of course I wanted to make the "little round world" of it but the program, PTGui, is too expensive for just trying out and it makes watermarks all over the image (also, I fucked it up at the end lol. But I did for a short while manage, to get the round world!).

Copenhagen must certainly have an annual dog show. Go to the show with a portfolio of your best dog photos and show them around. If you can hook up with a prominent owner and offer them a free photo shot of their prize dogs while the show is in progress you may attract other owners or breeders to your services. People who have show dogs are wealthy enough to pay well for portraits of their favorite dogs.

HAHA! I did it!

Photoshop CS5:

Make your panorama
Resize it, so it is square size (it looks weird, its okay) - like original is 3000*500 px, resize for 2000*2000 px
Rotate image 180 degrees
Go til Filter -> Distort -> Polar Coordinates and select 'Rectangular to Polar"

And there you go...:

Nice one Mai :D How many shots did you end up taking to get a full 360 deg pano? Did you just do a one level vertical or did you end up doing vertical + horizontal pano?

My attempts at doing these so far have been let down by the pano I've taken. Too much faffing about trying to get a nice neat join in the ends of the pano.

26 shots! When I had made the panorama, I copied a small bit of right end of the image, moved it to the beginning of the image (left side) so I could crop it exactly.

Well, I made horizontal and guess it should be vertical. But it used almost every image so yeah well.. Maybe I should try one vertical to see the difference.
