i have been quite happy with eBay, though i make it a point to do some research on the seller first.
It has been good to me mainly cos it is quite tough to get a lot of the products easily through the vendor, cos not many vendors other than the Nikons & Canons and such others are available.
I bought my Manfrotto tripod from eBay (cos the retailers seem to be present only on eBay), my D7000 (!!! Cos D7000 was unavailable for over a month & this dude charged me a decent amount lesser with warranty & stuff), some bags and other non-photography stuff as well.

Not sure about global eBay, but here we have some kinda buyer protection system where the money is paid to eBay and they release it to the vendor only after the buyer confirms the item is as described.
If not, you ship the product back & eBay refunds the full money + shipping.

So advice would be to do a thorough check & go for it if you are satisfied

I just bought a film camera off of the bay for 27 bucks shipping included. Same model of camera John Glenn orbited the Earth with in 62 or so and if it were manufactured today it would probably cost over 500. Mine is mint like new despite being 50 years old and it works perfectly. I probably wouldn't be able to find such a deal any where other than Ebay.

If I were going to buy a new digital camera I would definitely look at Ebay to see what was there.
