Thanks for all the replies at the moment i have just got back from a lot of driving and waiting in car parks so this thread will be studied tomorrow with a clear head :)

Just for reference the pc I built, and probably needs upgrading works fine for image editing in raw

Curiosity, how long does it take to open/save a raw file with 1gb of ram?

I don't think your memory is the limiting factor in the speed of opening or saving a file but rather it's a function of the speed of your processor and the read/write speed of your HD.

The situation is i dont need a replacement yet but am getting close,at the moment i am using a 4 year old Medion with pentium (r) dual core e5300 2.6 ghz,with 3gb ram not sure which ram and shared graphics,viewnx2 is crashing occasional especially when transferring over the 1gb of info from the sd card via a card reader.
I had considered having this one rebuilt but thought by the time the work had been done it may make more sense to renew the complete pc,cant remember the spec but i have a samsung lap top which i believe is faster ? but laptops dont suit me,i have a 23inch 3D monitor for my 3D pictures and want to carry on using it which i find a pain via the laptop.
Just saw the pc in the link this morning and knowing how things move on over 4 years wondered if it would be ok.
I dont do 3D video and if i edit any video its fairly basic so its only the raw files i thought i would need to cover,the one in the lnk is out then but i will re read this thread several times to get things in my head.

The Intel E5300 is not a bad processor at all and 3GB of RAM is not that bad either. I'm wondering if your machine might need a little spiffing up and nothing more. These are the apps I use to keep things running smoothly. If you're not using them, I suggest you try them out. Run them in the order they're listed and reboot your computer.

cleaning the registry, tweaking the start up, and uninstalling un used programs definately help. If its quite an old drive then a defrag can help but its not something that makes much difference compared to the first two

Though they are extreme improvements on the Vista & XP, they are no way going to meet the stability of the OS X.
Even Linux, the free distros are far better than any version of Windows..
I've been using PCs right from the beginning & just this year got the Mac.. and am glad i did..
Haven't had a single blue screen or random hangs :p

iMacs are probably the only product from Apple that i think are worth the name, fame & money

I totally agree. I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.4 and a Dell XPS 17" (L702X) running Ubuntu Linux, 12.04. Both have 8GB of RAM. I plan on updating the RAM to 16 GB each, very soon. The MacBook Pro is 3 years old with a Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz processor. The Dell is a year and a half old running a quad core i7. It is definitely faster than the Mac but the Mac holds its own without breaking out in a sweat. :) Video rendering is definitely faster on the Dell quad core i7.

I flip flop my photo processing between these two. They are stable, reliable and get the job done. I have to use Windows 7 at work and it still does not have the speed or stability with the same applications.

If you can afford a Mac, I would suggest that you get one. No matter what you end up with, you need at least 8 GB RAM, and get as fast a processor as you can afford. As others have said, stay away from the Celeron processor. It's not designed for what you want it to do.

BTW, my cameras are a D3000 and D7000 and I shoot RAW. Processing on either of my laptops is not a problem.
