A monopod is very useful and if you get the right one there is no problem bringing it along. I have one that has a soft collar to screw down over the spike at the bottom and a round knob to cover the camera mount. With the soft handle grip it looks like a regular walking stick. A string tripod also works well if you've a steady hand already.

Forgive my ignorance but what is a string tripod?

You attach a string to the bottom of the camera - let it dangle to the floor and STEP ON IT. Lift up the camera to tighten the string and you have a stable situation.

You can tie one end of the string to a bolt the correct size to fit in the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera and the other end to a large steel washer (makes it easier to hold down with your foot). You need to just make the string the right length for you to hold the camera comfortably to take the shot with the string taut.

You can't get long shutter shots like this tho, putting your camera down is the best option :D
