Interesting thread, but it still comes down to the Photographer in the End.

Thanks folk enjoyed the discussion.

I agree that its more the photographer and their use of the equipment than having the biggest, best and most expensive camera on the market. There are some of my pics that I have taken since I started using digital that I would put against any professional photographer -- mostly my luck rather than talent but taken on an average digital camera. Photoman7mc I hope that you find that the 3000 meets your needs.

It's a decent camera, easy to use and can take some really nice photos. It's missing a lot of features but you can still get it to do a lot, especially with good lenses.

everyone keeps saying it's missing a lot of features but never mentions any of them. what features is it missing that would make people think the D5000 or D3000 are inferior cameras?

That's a good question. A lot of people mention features as a drawback because that's what they've read on other sites or in reviews. The truth of the matter is the D3000 and D5000 are VERY capable cameras for the majority of people. Heck, most of the folks with higher end cameras don't use the majority of the features available to them. Day-to-day photography for the photo enthusiast does not demand tons of features. Unless you have very specific needs you should feel confident that buying a D3000 or D5000 is a good investment. Do I own one? Among other Nikon cameras, yes I do. It holds a place in my gear bag and gets used very, very often.

I agree, its not the camera, most cameras will do what you need it to do regardless of it's price. I have a D200 & a D80, but I must say I use my little Canon G10 just as much. It is small easy to carry around and doesn't get in people's personal space when I want to take a shot without bothering them.
The great thing about the D3000 is it size and weight, plus the how to menu, great little camera.

All interesting replies & I agree with them.
No manufacturer today really makes a " Bad" camera but of course once in a while a 'wrong un' will get out. If you get one Send it Back ! they dont want bad publicity.

The two biggest advantages I see and use are an in camera focus motor and low noise with high ISO. I have a couple lenses I would not be able to auto focus with if not for the D90.

Have you visited the Ken Rockwell site and saw his post on D3000? :)

Ken Rockwell is well known for having an opinion on everything, and like all opinions they're quite often wrong. This is the same guy that 2 years ago claimed that digital couldn't compete against film, and then went on to say that he'd always been a staunch advocate of digital. Take everything you read there with a pinch of salt, he's got a twisted sense of humour.

I have to disagree with the claims that the D3000 or the D5000 are the worst cameras made by Nikon. The photographer has to rely on their own creativity and ability in order to make an exceptional photo. Its not always the equipment but what you can do with it! Some of the coolest photos come from a simple pinhole camera. I've been using a D5000 since March 2010 and I LOVE it!

It was actually the D3000 that got me interested in Nikon. A buddy of mine bought one and I was totally impressed with his results. He was coming back with pictures that equaled shots from more experienced members of our group who had cameras costing 3-5x as much.

It constantly amazes me how often an old carpenter's hammer does not bend the nails, but the apprentice's hammer bends a lot of them.

Old carpenters know how to find good hammers.

I love my D5000 it was a better choice over the canon xs I hated that camera. I have been able to find my creative side with the D5000 since that is less reason for me to want to touch my photos up with color. I love how the Nikons color is so bold and in your face. With my canon xs I felt the need to always touch up with color or saturation, it seemed as everything always had too much red in it. Since buying and loving my D5000 I am considering in a few years upgrading to a more pro Nikon model and keeping the D5000 as a backup. It’s perfect for a beginner to get in the loop all the right ways. I love it. And the tilt screen is my absolute favorite option. I was able to see what hummingbird eggs look like in a nest without touching it thanks to the D5000 tilt screen.

P7000 in my book is the worst Nikon. Horribly slow processing of RAW, very slow zoom, and small sensor. Unfortunately P7100 doesn't seem much improved.
Guess my money will be going on the Canon G13.
