I noticed that too and was also confused. Do House Sparrows use other bird's abandoned nests?

I have a couple of wren houses. The openings are too small for sparrows, but the sparrows still check them out. They hop all around the branches trying to see if there is a way they can get inside. Then I got a couple of bluebird houses. Those are taller. The sparrows took quickly to them, and it's where they make their homes.

This birdhouse was also taken over by a sparrow this year. The bird was lying inside with its head facing out and its eyes shut. When it opened its eyes, it became startled and flew off quickly.

I think the heron realized the fish was too big to swallow, so he dropped him back in the water and the fish splashed away.
