I noticed that too and was also confused. Do House Sparrows use other bird's abandoned nests?Funny looking swallows
Doubt they will try to nest there and I've only seen house sparrows build there own nests but may throw chickadees and such outta there nest boxes

Yep. They are House Sparrows...
In many places around here the House Sparrows use the swallow nests and are finished raising the family before the swallows get here. I guess they are time-share nests.
They don't seem too worried that they are only feet away from an owl nest, either. Although when mom or day owl takes off, things get very still and quiet.
