How do (I use present tense to mean all, not just recently posted) you catch all these small bird images with so high clarity? How far away from you? Are these (today's) with a snowy background? So bright. All wonderful shots.

Great images of an incredible bird @Woodyg3
Thanks, Fred!

Thanks for the kind words. Distance varies, but you do need to be reasonably close. I'm terrible at estimating distances, but basically I just get as close as I can. If I am patient the bird may come to me rather than me approaching it. Usually I just move slowly, indirectly, and without looking right at the bird. Also, as far as getting a sharp shot, I use the highest shutter speed that seems reasonable in the given lighting conditions.

The background is overcast sky, and I had to process these shots to bring up the exposure on the bird and lower the brightness of the sky.

My guess for the last 3 waxwing pictures would be something like: no 1: 11.2m, no 2: 7.08m and no 3: 7.1m. All with a 500mm lens mounted on a Nikon D500.

+1 on the great pictures.
