Nice shots! Out of interest how close can you focus with that set up? Have you ever used your 300mm with extension tubes for macro? I'm thinking of getting the 300mm f/4D and would like to be able to use it for shots like these as well as birds. Are there any drawbacks of this lens for close up work like this?

You can't focus very close. I think 7 feet or so. The pics are sharp enough that I am able to crop a fair amount and still get nice images.
