The progress of sensors is amazing,, I am digging some older 4G flash card to give to a Sigma SLR owner.
He has an old sigma SLR, I think it is like 4 Meg SLR! and the maximum flash card it can read is 4 G. This was not that long ago.
Sometimes it is fun to look on ebay at old D1X,, usually they close between 200-300 dollars for a clean one. Professional cameras with ancient sensors.
I imagine the day that D3s finnally go for 300 dollars.. but that might be a long long time, and by then, most of them will be worn out.
I considered the 10 Meg to that magic point of quality, although 6G can still produce a heck of an image. Plenty of D70s, etc that produce fine images up to 11x14 prints.
and that is why I don't think the D700/D3 generation price will collapse in a long long time, because the sensors from this point on meet the printing needs with high quality.
I personally never been to interested in the D3/D4 line,, just because of camera size, I have never been a fan of large body cameras. Heck, I loved my Olympus SLR for its smaller size over my Nikons, even though the old Nikons SLRs are fairly small compared to my D800.
Of my current set of cameras, my favorite form factor is the D7000. For some its too small, but for me, just perfect. When I am using the D800, I do like the form factor, but then I pick up the D7000, and go wow.
Too bad the D600 has a QC issue, because for me,, this is almost the perfect FX. One more generation when they remove the antia alias filter, AND fix the shutter design, AND BUMP it up to say 36 million pixel, AND keep the small size.. bingo, I'll sell my D700 and 7000
and keep the 800/600 as the pair of SLRs.
