Why did you choose Nikon?

A few folks have noted their first "real" camera. Mine was a used Argus C3 I bought specifically for a photography class in college. I bought a camera that was almost 20 years old at the time. That was 43 years ago. Can you imagine using a camera from 1992? Wow, things have changed. I prefer my Nikon D5100 over the Argus.

Was that 66 dollars for the whole kit? That price would be great for today but it seems inflation has won the battle. I bet that thing still runs like a champ.

Nope. For $66, you only got the camera and the case. No telephoto, no wide-angle, and no fancy range finder. And you actually had to turn some dials and know a little math.

AND.... $66.50, in 1956, equates to $527.38 in 2010 dollars.

Lol that ad was misleading. That's not to bad I guess. That's about the price of a D3100.

I do beleive that this was the very first camera i actually used. Not sure if the folks still have this. Obviously, they got it when they subscribed to Time magazine. Anyone else ever used one?

I went with a Nikon DSLR because back in the early 70s I had a Nikon F2, and loved it. I had three lenses with it, which I used a good bit. I had lots of photo courses in school. That's why I bought the camera to start with. I wish I still had that camera. So, when it was time to buy a DSLR, I was familiar with Nikon quality, and wanted to stick with a brand I was familiar with.

They have a Canon camera where my wife works (I forget the model number). She has brought it home a couple of times, when she needed to stop on her way to work the next day, to take a couple of pictures. I played around with it, and found the Nikon menus are easier to navigate and the buttons and adjustments are easier to use on the Nikon. So, to me, the Nikon is much more user friendly.

I think I definitely made the right decision buying the D7000, especially now that I've learned the camera. Of course i would have loved to get the D3 or D3s, but couldn't afford thousands of dollars to buy a camera, since I'm not a pro and don't make money with it.

This is the issue I had. I felt that Canon menu system was clumsy. It was harder to find what you were looking for because of so many sub menus. From the get go I should have just purchased a Nikon but was talked out of it by my Canon buddy who spun tales of whimsy by saying that we could share lenses and I would have to spend that much. He did have some premium lenses but in the end I just wasn't happy with my choice.

I just hate the fact that Canon releases new DSLR every half year and de-values all their camera bodies within the year of purchase.

Optics-wise, I think they're very close regardless.

Or the fact that the only cameras that are made of magnesium are pro bodies now.

I shave my head, so yes, the flowing hair is antagonistic...but also the skin tight anything. I have liked maybe....2% of his roles, maybe i'm just jealous of his wealth and arm-swag (Demi and others).
:p

just a Nikon Lens Habit, and the camera is the byproduct, actually,, because the Nikon feels the same as 25 years ago,, go find an old F100, and tha pick up the lastest D7000, uncanny, barely changed.

I got a Pentax ME Super for my 21st in 1986, because my dad had one. He later bought an Nikon F601 with the metal 75-300 zoom. This was £450 around 1991, which is more than the current 70-300VR without any conversion. Sadly he passed away in 1993 and I got the gear. When I went digital I got a D70 so I could use the 75-300 and it came with an 18-70 so I had a good rig.

Now my wife has a D300 and I have the 300s plus we have a selection of glass which keeps growing. We are both very happy with our choice. I remember when I got the D70 the Rebel in silver was the competition; loosely! I remember reading something at the time that said if you turn up at a wedding with the Rebel you may be asked if the photographer has arrived yet. When you turn up with the sexy black Nikon, people say "oh good the photographer is here".

I still have the F601 but never shoot film these days. I'll probably keep it as the used price is very small and it has sentimental value. I have a 28-70 with it but my 18-200 is sharper so I don't use that either.
