Sorry if I sound daft, I have a D7500, and I'm new to the game. Just playing at the moment
When I use all other modes, i get an image
if i turn the selector to M or A i get nothing but blackness on the image

What settings are you using? If you have your aperture very small, say F22 or F32, it will allow very little light through to the sensor. Try setting your camera to M and set it to F8 and 1/500 sec with an ISO of 100 and try a test shot in bright sunlight.

Don't know your familiarity with manual and aperture modes but maybe look at some videos like the one

In M or A mode, your exposure settings are likely too dark. Set a lower f-number (like f/3.5), increase ISO (try 800 or 1600), and in M mode, use a slower shutter speed (like 1/60s). Make sure you're shooting in good light and check the exposure meter in the viewfinder to balance the settings.
