Why am I so stuck on prime lenses?

I don't always get a thought to paper in the clearest way. Where I was going was Bill reaches for his 18.5mm, and perhaps it's not the fact it is a prime, but an as-we-see-the-world lens.

This for me is the main reason I am drawn to my 35mm f1.8 lens when using my d5100 and why when I use my wife's V1 I stick with the 18.5mm f1.8. I love the 'as we see it' perspective. For me it's gives such a natural looking result.

I've never used a longer focal length prime so can't compare to say a 300mm 2.8 lens but I find the focus speed to be faster in the primes I have over the zooms.

I forget sometimes how light and fast the little prime lenses are and just how much fun they are to shoot with. I have been reminded of that by this thread so I got out yesterday, did a little walkabout with my little-used 50mm f/1.8G and really had a lot of fun. That experience, in combination with this thread, has motivated me to put myself on a "gear diet". For a period of time I'm getting back to basics. I'll be doing all of my shooting in Manual mode, at ISO 200, with my 50mm f/1.8G as my only lens. Duration of this Assignment for Myself has yet to be determined but I'm thinking 30 days would be good. I'm going to do my best to do at least a little bit of shooting every one of the next thirty-days, though my life does not always accommodate me in that way.

When I use the 50mmF1.8 and D3300 the whole package - size and weight approaches Range Finder cameras. The combination is lighter than the Sb700 flash with batteries.

All valid reasons about the primes. I have both combinations and it boils down to personal preference so there is no right or wrong answer.

I use a prime lens if i have a specific task to shoot such as portrait, macro and sports for long telephoto.

For event photography where you have limited space to zoom in and out with your feet, that is where the zoom excels which is why I prefer them.
