Whiskeyman's Shot-A-Day 2014

Thank you, Don. I was disappointed with it and almost didn't post it. It was shot at 1/500 and should have been at 1/750 or 1/1000 to avoid motion blur.

There was plenty of light to do so, but I had to turn it into a "learning experience"!

The next to the last one was really the only one that had some motion blur but even it was not that bad. I finally got a bird in flight that I really liked only a week ago. I have tried so many times only to fail for one reason or another.

These birds are truly beautiful to watch. There are only a couple of places I every see them around here.

I also find birds in flight very difficult and for myself, I have found the best results have come if I set a widish aperture, ISO 400 and use aperture priority and let the camera take care of shutter speed. I've managed to capture some reasonably OK shots that way as the shutter speed is then pretty fast.

That last shot is fine It's really quite good

The light was all over the place in these shots, so I did some more "extreme" post-processing. I may tweak exposure even more, and apply some stronger noise reduction techniques later.

Back to the pond to look for an egret; found two, and two herons and some other bird that I'm not sure about and its too late to look it up.

Here are some of my egret shots.




I chased this poor bird all around this pond. I need a longer lens for this work, and to bring my tripod with me on these trips.
