I'd like to replace the 18-55 DX VR lens once and for all. It's just not good enough for my D7100.

I'm looking two Sigma lenses. The 17-70 f2.8-4 Macro OS or the 17-50 EX DC OS HSM.

I don't know much about either lens. I'd be using it just as I was using the 18-55.
General bumming-around-lens for the times I can't lug around a bunch of primes.

Which one's best?

I don't really know that one of them is better than the other...

What would you say is more important or more desirable to you: a constant f/2.8 aperture or the extra 20mm of focal length?

Both lenses are reasonably sharp wide open across their focal length (some reviews have complained about the 17-70mm being soft at 17mm, but I've seen plenty of examples showing otherwise). Both lenses are 1-2 stops faster than the usual f/3.5-5.6 kit-lens and both offer great image quality. Some people want the extra range of the 17-70mm, some people want a constant f/2.8 aperture. Personally, I'm big on constant aperture lenses: I simply prefer them.

I agree with Fish that my choice would be the 17-50mm f/2.8. When a zoom lens offers macro, the ability to do macro generally isn't as good as a fixed focal length macro lens. Plus I too prefer having the constant f/2.8 aperture. What it means is with the 17-70mm variable aperture lens, you will have f/2.8 at the 17mm end, but it will be f/4 at the 70mm end.

Probably constant f2.8 aperture. I guess I answered my own question.
If 2.8 is more important, there you go. If you looking for an excellent walk around lens that happens to be faster then a kit lens and has excelelent performance, the 17-70 is your choice.

For me, I decided on the 17-70 C and it is a stellar lens.
