Which SD Cards

How do you tell if a SD or SDHC card is authentic and not a fake or a clone?

Unfortunately you usually need the card 'in hand' to visually inspect and or test!

Best solution is to follow SanDisk's advice (in the case of SanDisk cards) and check if the seller is an authorised dealer for your region:
Verifying if a SanDisk product is authentic

If buying on EBay see this:
How to identify counterfeit SanDisk Ultra II Secure Digital Cards

Fake SanDisk cards can usually be picked by the colour or logo not quite being 100% right, or in some cases the moulded logo or such missing from the back (or details on back not matching the front)...

See this chaps testing process (again you need the card 'in hand' to do it):
How to Test Fake Flash Memory

Google is your friend - lots more around... I think it's mainly SanDisk, followed by Lexar & Kingston who have their memory cards counterfeited in large numbers...

If in doubt always buy from a good reputable store, even if it costs you a few more $! :)

P.S. My favourite is on the SanDisk forum - fake 2.5" External Hard Drive - you wonder why it's got the drive light flashing but its not being recognised by your computer, and you open up the case to find:

...yep that's right - 2 big dynabolts & some washers to provide some weight to fake the presence of the HDD, along with a nice little LED light running off the USB socket's power contacts!

I get all of my SDHC cards from Best Buy only because there are no real Photo gear/camera shops here in Jacksonville, Florida. At least since Wolf Camera and Ritz Camera closed up shop here. Go figure a metro area with 1.6 million people and no camera stores! From what I see online the closest real camera store is down in the Orlando area.

Today I bought this one. I don't know how much in your country here in Thailand 173 US$

Looks good - that's what I'd go for myself... Will be superfast in the D80 (10MP) and should be plenty fast enough for the D5100 (16MP).

FWIW that would cost between NZ$72 and NZ$130 plus any postage here in NZ (at current exchange rate about US$58 to US$105).
