Hello, Thanks for reading. Which would you biy if you were me considering:

I have a D7000 and love it.
I will upgrade in a year or two to a full size sensor
I have an fx 50mm lens
I have an fx 105mm lens too.

I need a wider lens. Should I buy an fx 24mm 2.8d ($300) OR just buy a used 18-55mm Dx (save the money and put it towards a d600)

Thank you,

Adam in Japan

Well one thing to consider... if you plan on going FX soon then getting DX lenses would be a little counter productive. I'd get the 24mm.

If you want wider and a bit of range, get the new Fx 18-35g, it is excellent for the price and you will be set with a great UW for Fx.

Hello Aall,
Many thanks for the replies. Yes, I definitely want to buy a full size frame so as you said, buying fx only makes sense. I will checkout the 18-35mm.
Thanks again,
Adam

Keep in mind there are 2 versions of this lens, the new G version is the one I am referring to.

If you are interested in the 24mm lens, I *think* that is one of the lenses where Nikon increased the Manufacturer's price. You can still get it for @ $350 new right now, but who knows what's going to happen with the Manufacturer's increase in prices for some of their lenses. If I were you, I wouldn't get any DX lenses especially if you are going to upgrade to FX in the future. The lenses should last you for many years to come. The 24mm lens is a very good lens! :)

Lenses last forever.....cameras come and go. The smart money goes to lenses. :)

And by last forever, I mean if they're taken care of properly and not damaged, etc etc etc :)

I would generally agree to skip the DX lenses in a case like this but the 18-55 is really hard to not recommend even at the worst of times. It could always be sold upon upgrade for not much of a loss (depending on purchase price, new/used/grey/etc). Note on bias: i have a soft spot for this lens and do end up recommending it to basically every DX user who doesn't have already have a kit zoom of some sort - it's still superb value though

That said if you feel confident that the 18-35g or 24mm optimally fit your future needs though they definitely wouldn't be bad lenses to own. My undisputed kit-lens bias aside i think it's usually for the best to get better lenses the first time around.
