Which D810 accessories will I need?

Oh ya one thing I forgot to mention! A good rod and reel! Lol ;)

I sure hope you have a blast my friend! It sure sounds like you should with a D810 to play with! Lol :D

Ahh, thanks. We're both fishkeepers, so catching fish isn't going to go down too well. We can both eat fish, but not actually catch them.

Shhhhhh don't tell anyone I said this........ But if it's like the D5100 I think it's way too light too. But you didn't hear this from me, got it...... Lol :p

The weight was something that concerned me. I was with a client who had a D5300 & 55-300mm yesterday. It was what convinced me, the D5300 & zoom lens seemed much too light to me.

Oh I get it your cans! Lol you keep fish but can't catch it, but you can still eat it! Your a can! You can fish to keep it, and a can keeps the fish inside itself! So your a can! Lol

I win! I win! I win! ;)

Just teasing my friend, though it fits the explanation! Lol ;)

It occasionally happens to me that my battery runs out since I prefer to not load them until fully empty. In the days of yore, doing that prolonged the life-expectancy and storage of the battery but I'm not sure that's still the case.

So, you create your own emergencies? :) The best thing you can do for your lithium ion batteries (camera and cell phone and laptop) is to "recharge early and often". Running then down is a harmful process. Maybe once every few months.

Thanks my friend! I learn something new every day! :D

Very different. For one thing, lithium is not nickle. It was only the old NiCd cells (25 years ago) that had the so-called "memory effect".

NiMH and Lithium, no memory, recharge early and often. Same as your lead acid car battery. Good battery practice.

Here is some knowledgeable advice:
Frequetly Asked Questions on How to Charge Batteries

It says things like:

  • Control discharge. Each cycle wears the battery down by a small amount. A partial discharge before charge is better than a full discharge. Apply a deliberate full discharge only to calibrate a smart battery and to prevent “memory” on a nickel-based pack.
  • Avoid abuse. Like a machine that is exposed to strenuous work, a battery wears down more quickly if discharged harshly and if force-charged with high currents.

There's no reason to be cruel to our batteries. :) Early and often is good for the battery, and good for our shooting schedule too. I carry spares, but I have never needed a spare camera battery (speaking of one day - recharge at night, if significant use).

FWIW (of interest to me): I drive a Toyota Prius (a hybrid with batteries). It uses about 170 D cell NiMH cells in series, about 200 volts. The D cells are square and have connector tabs on them, but they are just NiMH D cells, 7 amps. The car computer is charging them all the time, and yet the battery warranty is eight years (nothing else is near 8 years). However, the computer will not charge them over 80%, or let them go under 40%. Full discharge is not a good thing.

I guess I'm showing my age! Lol ni-cad's were the only batteries I had much experience with, when it came to rechargeables. I never really thought about battery packs much since those old days, so I never read up on the newer stuff! If I had I might have saved my cordless drill battery packs. Shows how dumb I can be sometimes about some things! :(

You may have just saved my dremel battery pack! We'll see. I got it on the charger, and the pack wasn't dead, but about 1/3 charged.

I think some of those are lithium ion now... Overcharge is sort of serious, so lithium ion (camera, smart phone, laptops) have semiconductor chips in the battery pack, called coulomb counters ( coulomb counter - Google Search sometimes called gas gauges, not sure that name is a plus?)
These chips monitor and counts the current flow in and out, and can report the charge status (that third pin on our camera batteries), and adds some of the expense of them. But the chip protects against overcharge, and disconnects them when charged (so you can leave them plugged in).

I would qualify the need for a spare camera battery in one day. Video is something very different. :)

@Gorf I'm so sorry for derailing your thread my friend. I was just so shocked with this new info, and it opened my eyes to a variety of things needing seen to here at home.

Luckily my dremel pack is good, and I was able to order a new and extended battery pack for my fairly expensive drill. :)

That @WayneF really knows his stuff!

I had temporarily forgotten this, but of course camera battery maintenance is the same as general battery maintenance. We use NiMH rechargeable batteries around the home maintained by a PowerEx unit & a spreadsheet! I have a smart charge unit on my 2nd car which does clever things to keep my car battery charged without damaging it. Li-Ion batteries, I generally keep charged, such as the iPhone which is charged every night plus wifey's iPhone & iPad, also.... the Canon Ixus batteries! So yep, we do all that stuff, it was just my brain being confused.

Lol!! Maybe I can have some of whatever you're on tonight?

I'm down with MAN FLU! Wifey gave it to me for my birthday!

Man Flu is a crippling and debilitating disorder indiscriminately striking down male members of the human species without warning. The illness is often referred to pejoratively by female members of the species who are in fact immune from the illness as man flu is now known to exclusively attack the XY chromosome carrier. If Man Flu is kind enough not to kill the infected party it will definitely leave him weak, sick, hurting everywhere and in dire need of TLC.

Medical professionals now also widely recognise that self diagnosis by the sufferer is the best means of identification as the symptoms of Man Flu are far more severe than the simple common cold which predominantly targets the XX chromosome holders (i.e. females). This goes some way to explain the cynicism some women display towards their male counterparts.

I'm like a boy scout; there are no emergencies when you're prepared. ;)

Thanks for pointing out that a full discharge has the opposite effect on lithium batteries. One goes into the loader right now.

Not sure it was ever very different... I have bad memories in distant years past, sadly more than once, thinking the advice was to be sure NiCd batteries were well run down now and then, that after my heroic attempts to do so, then the batteries were ruined, and I bought new ones, or in one case, a new appliance with built in batteries. There are limits to all things. :)

Wasn't my fault. The dog got under my chair and gassed me! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Lol ;)

No, just one of those very rare days where my depression eased up. But I like the dog gassing me story better! Lol :p
