I have just purchased D5100 and I am still learning where the buttons are let alone what they do! LOL What I need to know is, on the weekend my hubby and son have the opportunity to drive V8 race cars. Its only 4 laps, but what is the best setting to use to get great photos? Or should I just use the Auto setting? I just wanna be prepared the best way I can before the big day! Thanks for any advice! :)

Good question! What kind of photos are you looking to get? The pan style where the car is in focus but everything else is directionally smeared? Or are you looking to freeze the car on the track?

It sounds like you're starting from scratch at figuring this out and don't want to miss the opportunity to catch this. I would suggest switching the camera to shutter priority and then find the closest place you can to the highway. Set the focus to AF-C (continuous focus adjustments). White balance to whatever the lighting is for that day. Now practice tracking cars on the highway moving fast (if you can try to approximate the track setting: distance, straight-away, etc...) and snap pictures at varying shutter speeds. When you find the right shutter speed you can freeze the car but the wheels will show the blur of movement. Take the shutter speed up higher and you can freeze the car and wheels. Practice, practice, practice! It takes practice to follow action and keep it framed properly.

Two more suggestions. When you are tracking the cars and snap the shutter you must continue to follow and track the car - follow through. If you don't your abrupt stop will not give you the photo you're after. If there are others driving that day use them as the test guinea pigs to dial in your settings.

Hope this helps.

Freezing car movement: Try 1/640 or above shutter speed. Assuming that you are shooting with a sunny day, S mode will be ideal, ISO 100.

For panning shots: Between 1/60 to 1/120 depending on the speed.

For General set up if you don't know what to use yet, set Auto ISO ON. Min sensitivity ISO 100 Max ISO 1600.
P mode (Professional). ;)
