What will future bring?

Yes I agree with Rick. Soon everyone else will come out with their own. Kinda like Canon and Nikon. One comes out with something new and a year later the other and so on.

Most of the camera manufacturers use third party sensors. Nikon uses sensors from Sony and others. So it new sensor is available then they may use it in their cameras.

There is a lot more to a camera system than sensor. The whole data path starting from the sensor down to demosaiking and software is individual to each manufacturer. Notice how Nikon cameras are superior in many ways to Sony, even when they use the same Sony sensor.

When technology hits a wall, something new is usually born. I think that's the mega-pixel race hitting it's physical limitations. I've thought some kind of plasma sensor would be developed, organic is interesting. It's probably years away from cost/price effective mass production if it is stable enough in the long run.

yes,, I would worry about the lifespan of anything like that,, I want to know that I can pick up my camera 10 years later, and still have stable color images. I know how consumer companies think,,
6 years lifespan,,, ok time for the consumer to buy another.
