Hi folks

i use lightroom 3 to develop my raw files. Is it worth also getting photoshop and if so what one ??

Thanks in advance

Can LR* do content aware fill? I use this feature all the time. Great for removing whatever needs removing.

CS6 is the current version but if you get PS make sure it is at least version 5

As Tracsoft said, content aware fill is great when you need to clone something out of an image. I can do 90% of what I need to do in LR, but there are times when I really need the additional capabilities of PS.

If you're not sure what you would do with Photoshop and do not have credentials to buy the Student/Teacher edition then I would recommend taking a hard look at Photoshop Elements 11. It has the content aware fill that has been mentioned, and it can be had for well under $100. It's sufficient to do a LOT of the non-LR work that I would normally need to go to Photoshop to do. Download a trial from Adobe and have at it for 15 days.

There are some nice additional features in LR4 as well, so you may want to look to upgrade that. For under $150 (Amazon price) you could do both, and still save $100 off what the Student/Teacher version of the current Photoshop would cost you.

Elements and LR trials are 30 days currently.

Amazon is toying with me on Lightroom. Every day it goes down then up in price by about a buck or so. Was hoping to get it down to $100 before my trial expired.

I have been tempted to turn on my trial version of LR that came with my D800. I use CS6 for my raw editing, and organize my pictures with my own system, so,, I too,, really wonder why to add another layer to my workflow?

One of the significant differences between LR, and Elements/PS/CSWhatever is a thing called "layers"... LR doesn't do layers... the others do... If you understand, and use layers, then you might consider adding one of the other Adobe programs... I use LR4 to do 95% of the bulk of what I do, and either Elements or PS for those one or two things that LR doesn't do...

It's all a personal decision... some folks view photography in a more purist vein where composition and control is done in the camera... and others simply use the camera as an entry point to creating images in post processing production...

PhotoShop does have a very high learning curve to get the most out of it. I am lucky in that my daughter has a degree in commercial art and can fly at PhotoShop. When I get stuck on a particular task in PS I threaten to kick her out of the house till she teaches me how to do what I want to learn. Thinking about retiring very soon and Then I am going to go back to school and take some classes in Photoshop at out local 2 year college.
