Would love any advice/suggestions on my next purchase for my Nikon D5100. This is my 1st DSLR and I am very new at all this. I brought my camera today, wont get it till tomorrow, it came with the 2 lens kits, what other accessories etc would you suggest I need or a must have? I want to take pics of sunsets/rises, animals, portraits, scienic/nature, lighting and action. Any suggestions would greatly be recieved and appreciated! :)

Books or videos on using the camera.
Books or videos on composition.
UV filters for each lens to protect the glass. Not the cheapest or highest cost filters.
A good bag with future room to grow - accessories.
As for lenses, shoot a while and you will start to find a direction torwards what lens you might want one day. However, the kit lenses will take you a long way before you out grow them.

A second battery. You don't want to be stuck photographing and having your battery die. I went on a photoshoot with a group, I used my camera a day before this photoshoot and maybe took around 800 shots. That night I prepared my gear for the next day and checked my battery, I had a full battery. We arrived the next day at our destination and started photographing,I took 3 shots then my battery started flashing. Now my camera won't even snap a picture, my battery was dead, it really sucked! So grab an extra battery so you do not make the same mistake.

Tripod, flash, UV filters for lenses (good advice on that above).

See this thread for other great ideas: http://nikonites.com/learning-photography/12812-basic-gear-newbies.html

Enjoy!

Do UV filters even do much for our modern, superduperubermulti-coated glass other than help create light ghosting?

Yes, they degrade image quality.
Other than that. No.
I would rather protect my lenses with a lens hood. Than with a layer of cheap glass.

A decent tripod (the Vista Explorer Tripod on Amazon is a good starting point for only $25)
Memory cards (2 at least, three is better in my opinion especially if you shoot RAW)
A spare camera battery (don't tempt fate by not having one)
A basic backpack style camera bag (no need to break the bank on this, either)
A copy of The D5100 Digital Field Guide (it's what the manual that came with your camera should have been)
A good camera SLING (sling, not strap) like a Black Rapid or Bos Strap Sliding Sling
Save yourself a couple hundred bucks over the Nikon branded SB-700 and get the Yongnuo YN-468-II instead.

With all the above you'd be well-armed, and good to go for a while, all without breaking the bank.

When I first got my D5100 I actually purchase Nikon D5100 for Dummies, it helped me out to get to know the basics about my camera, so buying a book is great advice. Advice I would give is get to know your kit lenses very well and practice and learn how to shoot in manuel mode. Once you`ve done both those things you will be in love with your camera.

Just buy some/most/all N-Photo issues and you'll learn a ton.
