that's is probably true unless.......... The fence posts are "bodark" (osage orange). If the bodark posts age at all, you're lucky to use a new staple once let alone recycle it. Ha! Seasoned bodark gets harder than woodpecker lips! When we cut new posts, we tried to use them within a short time. Green posts were easier on your fingers and staples. Ha!
how do you test a woodperkers lips? Lol

I believe it was used to pull staples holding barbed wire to fence posts for cattle ranches when they need to replace a rotting or broken fence post! :)

Actually, I have never used one for pulling fence staples. To my way of thinking it would be too heavy to lug around when I can carry fence pliers in my pocket/saddlebags which do a fine job of pulling staples. Ha!
