What is the reason behind the "50mm prime" theory?

The word "perspective" is defined as something having the same "field of view". Both terms are saying the same thing.

Perspective - (Merriam Websters)

-the appearance to the eye of objects in respect to their relative distance and positions

-Depiction of three-dimensional objects and spatial relationships on a two-dimensional plane.

I would argue while field of view and perspective are *related* they are *not* the same thing.

Field of view simply does not change linear perspective and nothing in that statement contradicts the above definition. Linear perspective can demonstrated. Lets use a photo example. Same shot, different crop, but both show the same linear perspective, e.g. the red fence appears no closer to the tracks in Perspective #2 than it does in Perspective #1; neither does the white tent. The Vanishing Point also remains the same in both shots. Both of these shots have the same linear perspective because the camera's position has not changed. Changing location changes perspective, while cropping changes Field of View. Elements appear larger in the one shot, only because the entire frame has been re-sized to equal that of the other and I have to wonder if that isn't part of what confuses some people.
