Ironwood I would love to know how you guys manage to get so much DoF on your macros.
If I get anything sharp (as in this image) then everything else is bokeh ...
Would extension tubes help?
While you consider whether or not to divulge your secrets - lunch is served.

I just went down to the front gate to check the mailbox for my plane ticket, its not there yet

, we will have to eat it cold tomorrow Oz.
Seriously though, that shot is very good. The focus pane looks to be slightly forward of the spider, if you were 1mm closer it would have been perfect.
The aperture setting is a trade off between DOF and IQ, go too small and quality starts to fall off, I can't really go any smaller than f16 with my setup or I notice my IQ starting to fall off. I see some people going down to f22, but I can't seem to do that and get away with it.
I'll let you in on a secret of mine, the big DOF you think you see in my photos is an illusion. The trick is getting the focus pane in just the right spot to get the parts of the insect in focus that matter e.g;- the eyes, and as much behind the eyes as the focus pane will permit, takes practice (and a lot of deleted shots

)
PP is a big part of it too, I am still using apple Aperture, even though its a Dead Duck, its what I know and feel comfortable with, I will have to change to something else one day (CC ?) and my learning will have to begin again.
