What does the current "L" in firmware do?

I checked my firmware on my D5100. I find I have 1.01 on both A and B and 1.003 on L. However, on the site where the firmware updates are listed, nothing is listed for L.... my questions:
1. Is 1.003 the current/correct version for L?
2. If not, what is?
3. If not, what would the later version of L do that my current version isn't doing?

After posting the above, I got an answer from one that the current L is 1.06. Since my L is 1.003, my question is: what does the 1.06 do that mine at 1.003 does not do?

Thanks for any help.

new problem: the instructions on how to download the upgrade includes a diagram which indicates that when loading the info onto the camera, that you get a choice between "done" and "upgrade" when you have the "firmware version" showing under setup menu. However, I only get the "done" and not the "upgrade" choice. Nothing I do shows the "upgrade" choice on my camera's screen. Is the "upgrade" missing from my camera or is the "upgrade" a function of the info contained when you place the material on the memory card? (not sure I am making problem clear)

The bottom line is that I cannot get the upgrade on L so that I change it from the old 1.003" to the new 1.06.

All help appreciated.

Are you putting the correct file (D5100_0101.bin) in the ROOT directory of the SD card? If I remember correctly it is pretty straight forward after inserting the card in the camera and accessing the firmware menu.

Just remember it is the .bin file and it goes in the root directory and not a folder.

Just reread your post. The update file HAS to be loaded in the camera before you can see the option.

more help needed I am afraid. What I download is "S-DCDATA-001006MF-ALLIN-32BI.app" and not "D5100_0101.bin" I have read elsewhere that the latter file is what I want, but I can't find it...any suggestions now?

I opened the S-DCDATA file and it does open but no where do I find the other file...somehow, I am screwing this up...

Again, all help appreciated.

Having continued problems, I contacted Nikon support this morning, and the lady I talked to checked, finding that Nikon has no current upgrade for L...and the current setting for is L is what I have, that is 1.003. Thus, I am giving up the quest for upgrading L. However, I thank you for you help. Probably, since I never was able to get an upgrade for L to work is answered by the info I just received...there is no upgrade for L currently. Thanks again.

I have the D5100 and did the upgrade again yesterday and the L is 1.006 I did download it at the page I posted earlier. PM me with a email address and I will email you the .bin file

I have checked twice today with Nikon support, both times with different persons. Both assured me that there no L upgrade for the L on the D5100. However, the second woman said it depends on the lens, and mine are Nikkor 18-55 and 55-300. The second woman said there was no upgrade for either of those lenses.

That said, yes, I would like to check out the site you mention, and I am messaging you with my email. Thanks.

This file is only for lens correction and its for all cameras. I just downloaded the same one today with no issues. Just download and follow instructions. It's the same as camera firmware mentioned just above. So you have to it twice. The post before mine has the camera specific firmware, you will have to download it as we'll and follow the instructions. So one upgrade for the lens correction file and another time for your camera specific firmware

The Dcsata file is for lens

The D5100 bin file is specific to your camera
