What do you think about this deal?

i did read the reviews and there were 2626 5*reviews, 107 2 star and 440 1 star reviews- I guess this should be enough for me to look elsewhere. I really appreciate the help with this as my wife and I are retired and 550 dollars is a lot of money for us to spend on a camera. I am just so naive about digital camera jargon-and I don't want to make a serious mistake when ordering. Thank the Lord you guys have patience!! Paul

I understand , and believe me 550.00 dollars is a lot of money for us as well even though both my wife and I are working.
This is why I keep stressing that you need to order this camera from a reputable dealer.

Adorama-KEH-B&H-Cameta-to name a few.

All the extra's are probably the cheapest of the bulk stock they have. The fun is to pick all your own accessories then you know you have secured a good deal and have quality items. I seems to me they are using cheaper stock to make the deal look sweeter than it is. If they are reputable and sell good products then they would leave it up to the buyer to choose accessories.

Thanks guys for sparing me the purchase of a useless lens- how about this deal?
Nikon D3300 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Black)

Seems to be OK. The lense is the latest VR-II, but there is no list of what else is there. Please check if the battery supplied is the original Nikon one. Here in India we get the body+lense+8GB card+bag for the same amount. Also check whether this is a grey market import or official US one.

I've done business with this web site. They are honest. And they are clearly stating it's an import. So it probably is grey. Did you look at the link I provided? That's not a bad deal. The factory refurbished cameras are a great deal. My 3200 came today that I ordered from them. It only had 75 clicks on it. Not saying yours could be the same as far as that low actuations. But when Nikon refurbishes them they come out looking new.

I understand how you want to save money, money can be tight for everyone. However buying bad - as I think you know will cost you more in the long run. Remember that a warranty is only worth the strength of the company you buy from. For instance if a shop selling grey imports which gives a 2 year warranty goes bust - that's the warranty in shreds too. The old saying is "Buy cheap - buy twice". Buy from someone like B&H who are well known & reliable.

How do you determine how many times a camera has been clicked? Does the 3100 have this feature? (my son has one).

The Shutter count is embedded in the EXIF data. You can use software to check either the NEF or jpeg file. When I export the NEF to jpeg and use IrfanView, the "Total pictures" is displayed in EXIF data.

Just note that this is the total shutter actuation, whether you took a picture or not. The count increases every time you go into Live View, or raise the shutter for cleaning.

Thank goodness you avoided that "deal". Some things that i picked up on: the flash unit can be had for $15 at Amazon. TheDigitalPros have it listed at $44.85. The table top mini tripod would never hold the camera and lens up. I have one of those table top tripods and they hold nothing more then a P&S camera. An SD card reader? really?? Most laptops have this built in. Lastly, the tripod is advertised as a tripod for a Nikon AW100, which is a small P&S camera. This makes me wonder how much that tripod can really hold. All in all, just a bunch of crap.

When I was looking to buy my D7100, I saw many "good sales" advertised online. Most of them are bundles with a ton of junk that isn't worth paying for. They're marketing the bundles towards people that won't do the research or don't care about what they are buying because of all the things the bundle includes. I emailed a few companies about their products and specifically asked if I would receive a USA model or a gray market model. Every company that made the effort to respond answered my question by stating that they "are a USA distributed that also sells gray market items. Because they can't control what leaves their warehouse, they cannot guarantee that a USA model would be sent or that it will be brand new."

To me they are saying that there may be a chance that you would receive gray market goods. Looking through their BS one can assume that there's a 100% chance that it is what you will find at the doorstep.

Google the company's name and look for "complaints." A reputable company shouldn't have any bad reviews that complain about customer service and/or being told that there won't be a way to receive a refund. Lookout for reviews on company's that advertise an amazing sale, call to let you know that the item is not in stock, and then try to "upsell" garbage products that are overly priced.

Time was when photographic equipment attracted a lot of duty and the Official product would be twice as expensive as a Grey Market one, so every one bought Grey Market stuff. The seller would give a week's guarantee, after that you were on your own. Nikon stuff rarely goes bad, so most were lucky.

Today the situation has changed drastically in India. With e-commerce sites vying for customers, we get Nikon DSLR and lenses any where from 10% for bodies to 50% off on lenses, with respect to the official price, all with Nikon India warranty.
