The kingbird came back and took a rest from worm gathering on my lamp post, just in time to test the new lens

Well, I went off today looking forward to putting the new lens through its paces. It did not go well. I was seeing very poor focus, so did some manual fine-tuning, which seemed to improve things a bit, but I was not impressed.

I took a moment to check all my settings and adjustments, but they all looked fine, so I did another focus and shot a triple burst. Here is what I got (AF-C set to FOCUS; spot meter; spot focus)

Then a loud metallic CLACK and everything froze. I had to pull the battery to clear it. This happened twice more, so I called it quits. When I got home I switched lens, both Tam and Nikon, and got it to happen two more times, but then I could not get it to happen again. I then tried to change to AF-S, and discovered I can't anymore.

I called Nikon and they agree that something is very wrong, quite possibly tied to my past accident, so it is going off to hospital. Better get those D5500 batteries charged up. . .

Not a good sign when your old 5300 body is taking better pictures of the same subject than your 500 that costs 3 times as much

You need to sign up as an endurance tester for everybody you use @wev. They should pay you as a QA tester. So sorry to hear that the D500 is going back in. I hope the turn around is faster this time.

Thanks Danno. I don't know what I did to piss off the camera gods, but it must have been pretty bad.

Hope you can get out from under it :) You have to believe that Nikon would have been better off just giving you a new camera body. I hope it takes less time this year.

Sorry to hear you are having more camera woes Wev, hopefully they sort it out quickly for you.

What is the new lens you have got ?

Thanks. I got the G2 version of the Tam 150-600. My old G1 was acting up and I got some unexpected cash, so I dove in. It may be that some of the issues were in fact the body's fault, but it's going back to Tam for a thorough clean and repair, then to a friend in exchange for a pricey dinner.

No, another friend with first rights.

I just hope Square Trade does the right thing this time and not try to fix the body. Even the Nikon service guy said that would be foolish (off the record, of course).
