Crazy day. I had to go by the department to fill out papers, so I can start back in February. As usual, I took my camera, just in case. When I arrived, I found our hawks were back and starting a nest up in one of the big eucs. Mom was busy building

As I was leaving, I heard some squawking in the big date palm in the courtyard and found some green parakeets enjoying the bounty

is this the Rufous?

No; Allen's. Too early yet for the rufous, though who knows with our weather? The only true key is the second right and left from the center tail feathers -- if they are notched, it is rufous, else it is Allen's. Other than that, generally, rufous tend to be a little smaller, stockier, and have a straighter beak. They are also noted as more aggressive, but Allen's, in my observations, can be damn testy, too. All in all, Allen's is the best bet short of an autopsy.

Got up feeling better, went out to shoot, and came home with a splitting headache. I have to stop pissing off the gods.
