They went at it hard and ended up in a heap on the ground. They both took a minute then up to the fence. She called madly and the other took advantage, flying off, into the nest, and off with one of the chicks (I'll spare you the pictures). I had enough at that point, so went home to have a beer and contemplate the circle of life.

Wow Wev, what an adventure. Great photos too.

Thanks, Walt. It was crazy, trying to keep focus, shooting into the shade with a fair wind blowing, and wanting to watch the drama at the same time. Lucky I got anything in the end.

"It don't mean nothing, drive on"

The saga continues. One of our students spotted the chick across the street, still alive, hiding in some low grass. Animal control is coming out and will probably take it off to their rescue facility.

Back from the department. We now have two hawk chicks rescued. The second was found behind the classroom, with mom doing fly-bys. Dave, the animal control guy, came out and checked both birds, who seem to be fine after their trauma. He recommended leaving them in a safe area and see if mom comes in to feed them. If she doesn't, we'll make use of all those left over lab mice. If that fails, he'll come back and take them off to the rescue station.
