Day 318/365 Candy Bomber
With Veterans Day this week we taught the class about WWII and the Candy Bomber. We watched a movie and read a book about him. Then we made some rice krispies treats. We wrapped the treats in foil and made some parachute's out of handkerchief's, just like the Candy Bomber did. We tied the treats to the parachute's, and sent our custodian up to the roof to throw the"Candy Bombs" off. The kids had a really great time learning about some history.

I am glad to see the kids learning about those heroes of the "The Greatest Generation". If history teaches us anything it is that what goes around, comes around. Our future as a nation will probably require another such generation of heroes. It is why I favor some form of national service. If for no other reason than to prepare the youth of today for the sacrifices of tomorrow. We cannot continue to subcontract our responsibilities as citizens. We must all be engaged.
Ron, I totally agree, my students are getting a great education about the "heroes". These kids are only 10, 11, and 12, but they are learning about the founding of our country and about the true heroes. I was so surprised that my students had never even heard about WWII, and all of the devastation of that time. It was awesome though, Moab Man came to school with his uniform on from when he was in the Air Force, and spoke to the class about the service that he did for our country. MM happened to be in Germany when the "Berlin Wall" fell. He had pieces of the wall and told the children about the circumstances of that terrible time. That was the most wonderful lesson that the students have had this year and maybe for their entire school career. It brought a new perspective to the children about true heroes. My students know what a true hero does and I can imagine some of my students becoming heroes themselves.
Yep, that was one photo from my surprise trip. I had a wonderful time but I am exhausted. My wonderful husband surprised me with a trip for my birthday.
