Weekly Challenge June 3 - June 10: Architectural Oddities

I love an interesting looking window, a captivating entrance way or an ornately decorated door. A city or town is defined in no small measure by the architectural choices that are made over the years which help shape its character and personality.

However there is nothing quite like something out of the ordinary or completely unexpected - architecturally speaking - to really capture one's attention. So it is with that idea in mind that I invite you to share your city or town's "Architectural Oddities" - it could be an entire building or perhaps just a strange juxtaposition of specific elements that say: "I'm different". So have at it and most of all have fun. (PS. Here is a fun thread over at Flickr with some great examples of strange looking architecture)

These challenges are designed to help you grow in your photography skills and creativity, and also to have fun. Be sure to visit the Weekly Challenge Rules & Guidelines for more information. This thread will be closed on June 10th (midnight EDT)...so get those photos in!


The Rules
1. Photos must be posted to the thread in order to be considered for the challenge.

2. Any photo submitted for a weekly challenge must be taken during the dates specified in the challenge thread and taken by you! Because not all EXIFdata can be verified, we will use the honor system here.

3. Challenges will be judged solely by the panel. Individual voting via post "likes" will be incorporated into the final selection of the winning photo.

4. Only one photo entry per member, for each challenge, unless otherwise indicated.

5. Judging criteria is based on the Twelve Elements of a Merit Image.

There will be no cash or prizes awarded for the Weekly Challenge, unless specifically noted by the site administrator. This is a member-run contest, and the purpose of the Weekly Challenge is to encourage member participation on the forums and to keep you taking pictures!

Any photo will be accepted for the challenge. Edited/straight out of the camera, it does not matter. You are left with complete freedom to do whatever genre of photography you wish to do, and your own interpretation of the challenge subject.

The closest thing to unusual that we have around here is the Octagon Barn. I live 7 miles from it and Sunday was the first time I visited it. It has 8 sides each measuring 42 ft 6 in. long and 24 ft. high. It has a poured cement foundation 4 ft. high that supports a 20 ft. high timber framed wall. The framing is sheathed with 1 x 12 shiplap siding and encircling the entire building are thirty 10 x12 6-lite windows. To the tip of the weathervane the barn is 70 ft. tall and covers approximately 3/16 of an acre. http://www.thumboctagonbarn.org/buildings.asp

OK, here's my entry. It is accompanied with a little history lesson
Thomas Jefferson had numerous gardens planted around the university area. Around some he put brick walls that ran in a serpentine pattern. He built these walls because they could use only one row of bricks and still maintain the same strength as a wall with multiple brick thicknesses.

It's the best I could do Hand Held at 6AM in the shade. I forgot to pack the tripod.

This morning, there was another entry above mine. Now it's gone... I believe it was an eight sided barn.

It doesn't take much to get this feeble old mind confused but that was enough. LOL

And shoots808, where's the exif data on that shot? looks awful soft, just wondering what happened there.
