Water vs the D3100

I've been wondering. Is rain a serious risk to the D3100? Do the nikon DSLRs have some protection or are you taking a serious chance of ruining your camera when out in say a mild rain?
I'm asking this because I just saw a photo of a nikon with water drops on it, and before that I assumed that rain was a big risk. I've been careful not to take my D3100 outside even if it was sprinkling, so as not to risk damage to my precious nikon.
So what is the verdict? Can my nikon d3100 handle the rain? :)

Sounds like that might be a good idea. Thank you. :)
It sure beats the first idea my friend horoscope Fish mentioned. lol :D

I would not expose it to any rain. I have been out in light drizzle/mist, but only for a matter of seconds. Anything beyond that, get protection. Some of the more expensive bodies are "weather sealed" but that does not mean weatherproof.

The D3100 and the D5100 are not weather sealed at all. Do not get wet. Do not quote me but I think the D7000 and up are weather sealed. Light rain on them is not a death sentence.

lol good one Pete! lol :)
Thank you Don, I'll keep my nikon high and dry for sure! :D

My wife and I had planned a few days of shooting north of us and the rain had been coming down for a week here. We decided to go out anyway. I carried a gallon Zip Lock bag with me every time we went out shooting for three days. We were lucky though. Ever time we were outside it would not rain but would rain while we were driving to the next location. I think the Rain gods in Alabama like Nikons.

Don't laugh - I use a "shower cap"( from hotels we stayed at) I keep one in my bag at all times just in case I get caught in a down pour and want to stay out awhile longer. It's a cheap quick fix :)

I've been caught in light rain with my D7000 and it was fine - dried it with kitchen towel when I got home.

This is disgusting - but i've also sweated all over it in a tropical house without noticing, My eyes started to sting too - the hair gel was running into them :( Camera survived..

Anyway, D3100 this looks hiddeious but not many people hang around in the rain to see:
