Want to get off DirecTV...need suggestions...

I think I want to try to get off of DirecTV. I'm just sick of their prices going up, Up, UP.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
What are *you* happy with?

I don't think Dish or Comcast are the answer either because they're just more of the same sort of service.

I am just starting my research -- So far I know of Roku and Chromecast. Both offer various services, but I haven't delved into all of that just yet.

Any thoughts?

It all depends on what is in your area. You will have to figure that one out on your own.


I am on cable here (Charter) an love it. Lots of HD, premium channels and best of all very fast internet. I get 30+ mb down all the time

i dropped directv - antenna for local channels - internet to watch shows on my schedule - roku/netflix @ $8 is working for me. To fill in the local library.

Netflix was great until I watched everything I was interested in then new programs were slow to be added. Its cheap though and if you have a good fast internet that will stream HD video it is a great alternative. Recently my financial situation has dictated that I can pay nothing towards any type of television programs so I went with a large antenna high in the air and I get several good digital broadcast channels including PBS stations, CBS my favorite, NBC and ABC, This TV, MeTV and all of the Fox lineup as well.

If you have Amazon Prime there is also the free instant video streaming that's included. Really between what you've already mentioned and possibly add Red Box for some of the latest movies you should be pretty much set. The bigger question to me is where do you get fast enough Internet to stream HD that is reasonably priced because it's not in some sort of services bundle to make it worth the effort?

I dumped cable TV entirely a while back; been doing Tivo/Netflix/Amazon Prime and life is grand. I really thought dumping cable would be a tough thing to do, but I don't miss it one bit and only wish I had done it sooner. I still get the local channels/networks (ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX) in HD for free so I can get my news fix, which I like, but all those hundreds of channels of garbage TV I was paying for are ancient history. As is the huge cable bill.

Ain't much left. Until the cable giants decide to let people pay only for the channels they want at a price that is right cable will never be a good option. Satellite is the same way. Over priced and channel redundancy is crazy.

You are all right. TV is a time zapper, I know, but DH likes a few news programs, Nat Geo, and a few others so I am looking for alternatives.

The channel redundancy and crazy pricing structure is my main problem. Turning the thing off -- permanently -- would be my first option, but we may have to work into that slowly. At least that's what I'm hoping for.
