Velbon sherpa series any good?

Thinking of getting a tripod over the next few weeks. I'm only a hobbyist, so I don't really want to spend mega bucks, and after all, I've just spent nigh on £350 on lenses, so I have been looking at the Velbon Sherpa series tripod and I'm just looking for feedback as to whether they're any good or not. Looking to do some long exposure shots so I need it to be sturdy. Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I had a Velbon Sherpa 600R (RF version without a head) as a second tripod. It was pretty light-weight (referring to stability instead of carrying weight), and soon, one leg simply snapped off at the base (thin wall aluminum leg simply sheared off)

I replaced it with a Manfrotto 055 (several versions, 055 is heavier than 190). Much better, and at the time, without head, it was not greatly more cost than Velbon (in aluminum). My favorite is an old original Tiltall, 40+ years old, but it's too heavy outside the house.

Velbon is not worth the money, in my opinion. I, too, have the Manfrotto 055, but like Don said, look into the Dolica brand. Excellent tripod for the money. Very well built and very sturdy.

I have been very pleased with the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT --- very steady and the center post design is very good for field shots of things in difficult positions.

Well thank you all for replying, going to have a look into the dolica brand now, realistically i dont really want to spend more than £100 as i said just spent £350 (which to me is a fortune) i dont mind 2nd hand aslong as its not been battered.

I've been using a Velbon Sherpa 750 for a number of years, it's well made and never let me down, it's a very sturdy tripod, and the geared centre column works very smoothly, the only thing I bought extra was another baseplate, as I used to take 2 bodies out with me ....

Going to chime in on Dolica tripods as well; I find them to be quite good.

The AX680P104 is a good example, very sturdy and won't break the budget.

Having trouble locating a UK stockist for dolica, now looking at the manfrotto 055 some of you suggested but will have to wait a few more weeks if that is the choice as to me it seems alot of money for some thing that may not get used, i want to try my hand at long exposure photography basically amongst other things :)
