Usually I have some type of filter on the front of my lens--mostly a UV filter. If I want to use a circular polarizer or a neutral density filter, then I remove the UV filter first as I don't like to stack filters unless it is absolutely necessary (such as combining 2 ND filters to lengthen my shutter speed). If I am shooting into the sun, I try to remove any filter just to cut down on flare.
If you decide to go with any filters on a wide or ultra wide angle lens, you might want to consider the slim profile filters. Some filters are thick (deep) and can create vignetting on those lenses.
