Using SB-700 on D5100 - help needed!

Hello!

I am experiencing a problem with my flash light that I have been using on my D5100. It used to be as simple as just pop it on, switch on and shoot. Now it seems to have stopped doing it.

I can't get the flash to fire any longer and I wondered if I might have accidentally changed the settings on my camera?

When I press the red button the flash fires but whenever I point and shoot, the flash doesn't go off.

So the issue is: how do I get my camera to recognise the flash? I've changed the batteries to see if that helps.. but no luck.

Any ideas?

I'm new to this, so any help is greatly appreciated :)

It might have gotten changed (flash) to a different mode. Make sure it's on TTL and set for on camera flash. Also, not sure if the 5100 has it, but commander mode. Make sure the flash isn't set to - -, and it's set to TTL if it has that mode. If not, factory reset the flash.

Hi Pat, what am I looking for? I have no idea what the settings should be.. Any ideas? Thanks!

Ouch!! I am at work so it is tough... I would have to grab my manuals... One thing you need to make sure is that both are set to the TTL setting and also...
Are you getting a ready light on the flash?

What happens when you take a test shot.. does camera fire and not flash? How is the exposure of the shot??
What camera mode are you in?? Auto, program, manual>?

I may be able to dig deeper when I get home later...

Thanks... 5100 does not have commander mode, that I can answer... I do not know if he specified but I am assuming he is asking regarding On Camera??

Ah. Wasn't sure about the commander mode. So that's not it. I would give a factory reset to the flash. Won't screw up any saved settings like a camera. I'm not familiar with the 700 exactly, but my flash mode gets changed every so often, and it doesn't fire. Make sure if it's on camera, it's set to be on camera in the flash. If it's off camera... make sure the settings match that. Sometimes buttons get hit inadvertently

On the flash itself, when you turn it on, there are 3 settings for "ON". The first setting is normal "On". Then there is "Remote", then "Master". Make sure it's set on the "On" for on camera use.

Yeah, the flash has to be in one of the actual menu modes to work. Modes like TTL or M, etc.

If you got the flash into its Remote mode for Commander, all of the foot pins are disabled, and it will not fire that way.
