upgrades

yeah i know , i know very well the biggest question possible asked all the time LOL

my brain has come to a grinding halt over it.

i had initially got my choice down to 2.

reason for the upgrade isn't because i think the camera will take better shots, its more i think i'm ready and need a few bits the D5300 doesn't have.

What i would like :-
Ability to switch modes without having to mooch through menu after menu to get at it - guessing a user setting.
Weather proofing big one in my book as ive bought waterproof cover after cover and they are fiddly and when you got o use camera you have to more or less remove it .
Better low light abilities without noise specially for my astro / MW shots
FAST - i like birds and nature.

cameras i initially thought about D7200, D7500, bucket list D500 and then i though D610 (now not, its basically a FX 7200) so for FX i was thinking D750 ok its not FAST as in D500 speed.

i get most of the pros and cons of both on the sensor size - i think lol

my lens collection isn't huge so the buying FX lens won't be an issue at all as i would only buy a super wide fast prime.

i currently have
DX 70-300 nikkor, 35 f1.8 Nikkor and sigma 10-20 f3.5 wide prime
FX / DX sigma 150-600 Contemporay

i would most likely buy a Samyang or Rokinon ultra wide for the FX and leave it there using the 150/600 on the FX as well as DX.

so which out of the 3 i've shortlisted listed whats the consensus.
D7500 - cheaper D500 less feature packed and the 1 SD card isn't an issue as ive never had 2
D500 - speed mostly
F750 - FX version of the 7500?

I'm not sure where you obtained this information, but a D610 is not related in any way to a D7200 - the D610 was out long before the D7200. And a D750 has nothing to do with a D7500 (and was out long before a D7500).

Nikon is doing away with the D3x00 and D5x00 series. Supposedly the D7500 will be Nikon's entry level DSLR. So they altered some of the features that the D7200 had to offer and came out with the D7500. It's true the D7500 has the same sensor as the D500, but overall the body has less to offer than the D7200. In fact, Nikon didn't make the D7500 to have a grip added so it's missing some of the hardware for one. That said, I believe Vello makes one although I don't know how good it is.

A couple differences between the D610 and D750 is the focus points don't stretch all the way across the viewfinder in the D610 like they do in the D750. The AF in the D750 is superior and the AF can lock onto the subject in low light sometimes much faster than the D610. The sensor of the D750 offers about a 1-stop improvement over the D610 for low light (noise). And the D750 has an articulating screen. That said, the D610 is still a great body if you cannot afford a D750.

What are the subjects you will want to shoot? If you are particularly interested in wildlife, then I'd suggest DX (for the reach). But for most everything else, FX is an excellent choice.

Hark , i shoot birds , and occasionally landscape if out with my street photography buddy, or if i've dragged him out and up the hills astro, either wide field or attached to a tracked telescope.
i currently have the D5300 and use the 150-600 on it so reach isn't so much of an issue on an FX body either
the D5300 is a cracking camera and image quality wise is why its taken so long to make up mind to upgrade it.
i know the d500 and d7500 have much better low light due to the bigger pixels on the crop sensor as they are down from 24 to 20, and get that the bigger FX pixels even at 24 will give better low light again.
and my choices of objects to shoot couldn't be more diverse lol

Keep in mind that on an FX camera the 150-600 lens is just that. However on a DX camera, like your D5300, it becomes the equivalent of a 225-900 lens. So the difference in reach between 600mm and 900mm, could be significant.

Finally, myself and many on this site, consider the D7500 a crippled camera and would select either a D7200 or D500 for a DX camera.

I have a D7200, D700 and Z6. I enjoyed using my 200-500 f5.6 Nikon for birds and such primarily on the 7200.

Both the D700 and D7200 are great cameras. The 7200 works well in Low Light as does the 700. I chose to go to the Z6 over an 850 or 750. Low light was the most important to me. The Z6 is a bit better than the 850 in most cases, and I do not need the large MP that comes with the 850. The 750 is close to the Z6 in photo quality and low light performance but the Z has IBIS and an electronic view finder that hooked me. It gives me this view of WYSIWYG. Stabilization and exposure are amazing and the focus system is great as well.

Personally I love the Z but some feel it is not as good at birds in flight. If I were not looking at the Z I would be looking at the 750 or 7200. The 7500 is just not a big bump over the 7200 in my opinion. I would also look to see what refurbished bodies are available. You can get a great price on them and they work fine. My 7200 was a refurb with less than 50 shutter clicks.

None of them are water-proof. Nikon calls them weather-sealed, and I think all of the models you have mentioned have that feature.

I upgraded my D5300 with the D7500.
I would do it again in a heartbeat. My needs were similar to what you seek. I chose to go with the D7500 over the 7200 for the upgraded sensor and big buffer(50raw) with the high FPS(8 fps) and upgraded snapbridge. I have no need for a second card or battery grip. The D7500 has no AA filter, same as your D5300 (and D7200). Both the D750 and Z6 have the AA filter. Thats not a huge deal as I am able to get tack sharp pics with my D800 which has the AA filter as well.
I feel MUCH more comfortable shooting in typical Washington weather using a weather protected body. I never took my D5300 out in bad weather which restricted its use too much for me. Ergonomics were the biggest upgrade. No more fiddling through menus just to change ISO. The tilty touch screen is also pretty cool, however I dont like it as much as I did the D5300 screen. That screen allowed me to get the camera in some pretty wonky positions. Much more restrictive with all other screens, even the tilty touch screens on all of them but the D7200(no touch or tilt to that one and if you want reliable snapbridge, go for only the newest cameras). I think Canon is the only camera with a screen like the D5300 now.
Would I love to have a couple hundred more focus points? Yup, but I got 90% of the D500 for less than half the price. No matter what you choose, now is a great time for upgrades because of the price drops across the board. The D750 just dipped below a grand, but I think thats not the lowest it will go. The D7200, if you can still find one is probably the lowest it will go. I got my D7500 as a Nikon refurbished for $650ish and Ive seen them for $599. They'll probably drop it another time or two before it gets discontinued in a few years. Theres probably another year or so before they drop the price of the Z6 below the $1500 mark and the D500 will probably never drop below a grand. Just my $.02. Hope it helps.

i've not yet made up my mind lol, so to help im going to go to a local camera store a proper one and actually get some hands on with both, no point buying sight unseen to find it feels wrong , if you know what i mean.
im down to the D500 and D750 after watching a couple of youtube vids

Just throw this in because you do wildlife, if you use the D750 and crop it to match the image size of the D500 both using the same lens the D750 will only be giving you just over half the MP of the D500, the D500 will give you 20.9 MP, thats why i never kept my D750 i needed to crop and i wasnt happy with how far i could go.

i know its not a dead thread yet but finally got some funds , im likely to have between 900 and 1500 smackers which puts me right on the d500 money as well as a z50 with 2 x lens and ftz just to stir up the mix LOL.
im still torn between the D7500 and the D500.
is the d500 really that much better ?
oh the z50 with the kit was £1200 or £900 with the fez and a 16-50mm meaning i could use my currently lenses with as well - nothing is simple anymore

Yes, it is. They share the same sensor, but what's under the hood is very different. Some of the key differences include:

• More frames per second when shooting in continuous as well as a larger buffer on the D500
• 1 SD card on the D7500 vs. 1 SD and 1 XQD on the D500
• The AF system on the D500 has 3x more focus points
• More dots on the D500 LCD screen for better resolution
• D500 compatible with a Nikon battery grip vs. not having the port on the bottom of the D7500 (Nikon doesn't make a grip for the D7500)
• D500 body Magnesium Alloy, D7500 body Carbon Fiber Composite
• Shutter actuation life rated at 200,000 on D500, 150,000 on D7500

If you do birds in flight go for the 500. If you wonder how well it works there are several folks that use the D500 here and do a lot of birds in flight over the 7500. IF you want to go mirrorless take a look at some of those in the Z50 threads, or talk to some of the folks that have the 50.

I am prejudice. I like the Z6 and the new mirrorless Z cameras.

I just had this discussion with myself. I had it down to D7200, D610 and D750. I have a D7100 and figured the D7200 wouldn't be a big jump and it came highly recommended. The price of the D610 right now is really good but I found a used D750 with only 3000 actuations for under $700 at one of the name photo dealers and it came with a 6 month warranty.

I went with that.

As long as you are aware, that's fine. My D7200 grip has contacts that attach to contacts on the bottom of the camera body which allows an exchange of information. Like @Danno said, if you are looking to shoot fast moving subjects such as birds, wildlife, or sports, the D500 would be the better option due to a faster buffer and more frames per second.

But if you are okay with the differences of the D7500, then go for it. It has the same sensor as the D500 and should yield amazing images.

D500 all the way for birds. It's just the best camera Nikon has, currently anyway, for things like birds in flight, deer jumping across a filed, etc.

It's not a problem to get excellent BIF images with a D7500 but, given the choice between it and a D500, it's the D500 that I'd choose.

sorry for the delay ive only just managed to get back on the site , what with the last couple years we've had, i did indeed end up with the D500 and its an absolute beast for wildlife, im still getting to grips with it as in the last year my health has properly suffered and ive not been out using it as much as i would like, plus i need a new short zoom lense as my af-p 70-300 is showing its age
