Hi all,

A friend of mine has recently broken his kit lens (18-55)and is looking for an upgrade that doesn’t cost too much, but has a good range (it ideally needs to be for general use, but with more range than the 18-55).

Thank you in advance.

What is said budget for another lens?

A used Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 can be had for under $300.

You state it should have more range, do you mean something like 18-105mm? Great all around lens that is $125-150 used. I had one for a while and loved it.

Other, more expensive, options are the 18-140mm or 18-200mm.

I've been using the 18-105mm for a few months now, it's a very good lens.

I vote also the 17-50 F2.8 from Tamron, but do keep in mind that some versions do end up being very soft at wide open. I did experience this on one copy that I did own.
However the 18-105, 18-140 are also suitable replacements that offer more versatility with being a W/A to tele.
The Nikon 16-85 is also a good replacement, but a bit more costly for that SWA end.

Also if money is no object, they can also look into the Nikon 17-55 F2.8, while not having VR, the low light capabilities are as beneficial.

Hi all - thank you very much for the replies (and apologies for my late reply).

I shall show your messages to my friend and get back to you, to see what he says.

Very helpful of you all to reply!
