Updating Firmware

My D850 currently has firmware version C1.10 with a XQD memory card slot. I want to update to C1.31 so that I can use CFexpress B memory cards as the XQD format is becoming obsolete. I have purchased my CFexpress B card reader and a Lexar 256GB Silver card which I have successfully formatted in my computer, and I have downloaded the D850_0131.bin file and copied it to the Lexar card, following all th instructions in the Nikon Download Centaur. When I insert the card into my D850 I just get a Err message in the top screen, and there is no "Update" option in the Firmware Version inn the setup menu
What have I done wrong?

Trying to understand here. You must update firmware to use CFExpress? And you are putting the firmware file on that new CFExpress card to write the new firmware (which is required to allow the card to be ready)?

The card carrying the bin file must be formatted in the camera then follow the instructions - paying attention to the update files must be in the main directory of the card not in a folder

If I were in your position you want to use the SD card formatted in camera (or your older XQD card formatted) the card used should not have anything on it but the firmware

This should solve the error message (also make sure your battery has plenty of charge)

Thanks for your replies. I had formatted my CFexpress card in my computer rather than in the camera. I have now erased everything on the card in the computer, and then tried to format the card in the camera using the set-up menu. I receive a message from the camera that the card cannot be formatted.

That's normal due to having the old firmware - you will need a working card type first to update the camera

After the update on the camera the new card should format

Nikonbill, thanks for your second reply. Does that mean that I need to find someone with a CFexpress card that has already been formatted and used in a D850 which I put into my camera to update the camera? Perhaps my local Nikon dealer!

You can also use the SD card slot but you must first set it as the primary card slot. To set it as the primary you need to go to the shooting menu "Primary Slot Selection" choose SD card.

Any previously working card should work to update

As long as there is only one card in the camera it should recognize the firmware

As Needa indicated the card slot used should be primary (I thought that automatically happened with only one card in the camera)

The firmware must be updated before using the CF Express card for any purposes

Additionally - if you have a local shop the update my be very reasonable.

Updating is easy but if a mistake is made it can be a bad day (camera damage)

If cost is low this my help you best
