Unable to save as RAW files

Hi All, I have a Nikon Z5 and am trying to save RAW to Slot 1 and JPEG to Slot 2. When I select "role played by card in Slot 2" in the Photo Shooting Menu, I receive a message that says, "Backup" selected automatically at current "Image quality" settings. When I go to Image quality, the only choices are JPEG fine, JPEG normal*, JPEG normal, JPEG basic*, and JPEG basic. I have run the most recent firmware update (1.50 for Mac). Does anyone know how I can save images as RAW files?

Thank you for your help!

Set image quality to NEF(RAW)+ JEPG fine. Then back out and go up to "Role played by card in Slot 2". There should be 3 options. The third is "RAW slot 1-JPEG Slot 2". Select this and you should be good to go.

I'm not sure I understand which file type you want to save in slot 2. The title of this thread says unable to save as RAW files. But in your first sentence, you mentioned wanting to save as JPEG in slot 2. Your last sentence says you want to save as RAW. Which file format do you want for slot 2?

I don't have a Z camera so am going by the Menu in my D750. If you want RAW as the backup, simply choose Backup in the Menu. No need to go any further in the Menu. If you chose RAW for slot 1, then you will get RAW in slot 2.

If you want to save as JPEG in the second slot, what Clovishound wrote is what you should do. JPEG Fine is the best JPEG file format.

I shoot this way. I have my RAW files on the primary card, my newer cameras have CFexpress in the first slot. I have it set to save JPEG in the secondary slot, SD cards. The JPG gives me an easy backup in case something happens to the RAW files. I have yet to need the backup JPEGs, but I started doing things this way after I lost a bunch of my images on my hard drive, and couldn't find my backup drive. I can normally shoot for a couple months without touching the JPEG card. When it starts to fill up, I can either transfer to a hard drive, or delete them. The Z5 has both slots SD cards, but the system is otherwise the same.

Clovishound has it right but I was also confused as to what you really were asking for help on. You must first select a Raw+Jpg mode for saving files, then separately in the setup photo shooting menu set the role played by slot2.
